Forget the details, a sign of intelligence?
Canadian researchers tell us why forgetting small things from time to time is important.
If you are jealous of people who have an infallible memory, this study will make you good! Because according to the works published by the journal Neuron , to forget small things is not just normal, but would also be a sign of intelligence. Researchers from the Canadian University of Toronto, explain that the purpose of memory is not to provide accurate information at all times, but rather to optimize decision-making by taking into account which is really important for us.
They reached these conclusions after analyzing data collected over years on memory , memory loss and brain activity in humans and animals. In mice, for example, when new cells are formed in the learning area of the brain, access to older memories becomes more difficult. This process would have many benefits from an evolutionary point of view because it allowed us to adapt easily to new situations.
Keep some space
Our brain would also have the ability to forget certain details while remembering the "global" situation, which allows us to generalize past experiences, to draw lessons from them and to apply them to the problems of the present. To forget where we put our keys from time to time would therefore mean that our memory works very well, indicate the authors of these works.
New technologies, which allow us to store information and access it very easily, are also conducive to this type of operation because they allow the brain to keep more places for larger memories.
